The Austin Humane Society is committed to finding a home for every healthy animal, regardless of whether it needs extra medical attention or training. And between you and us, special-needs pets are some of the best pets around.
If you would like to learn more about any of these animals, contact our Foster Care department at (512) 685-0112 or fostercare@austinhumanesociety.org.
Princess Tiny1 year old Chihuahua/Rat terrier mix
Princess Tiny is an active, friendly little girl. She is crate trained and house trained, and she gets along great with other dogs. Back in August, she had surgery for a dislocated patella, and she is getting along well in her foster home. The good news is she doesn't need any more medical treatment for her leg. Sometimes, Princess Tiny will bark at strangers, especially males, and she will need to be introduced to new people carefully.
Olive4 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix
Olive loves to meet new people and is always ready to make a new human friend. She's not quite sure about other dogs though, so she needs to be your one-and-only canine. She also needs an adults-only home with experienced pet owners who are willing to continue working with her. “Sit” and “down” are old news to this obedience school veteran, and she's already learning “stay” and “roll over.” She will reward you with a life filled with laughter, smiles and sheer love.
Woody3 year old Sharpei mix
Woody loves new people, and exploring the neighborhood on walks is his hands-down favorite activity. He's a great mix of active and calm, and will play catch in the backyard then chill out at your feet. But Woody's inexhaustible curiosity has made him a bit of an “escape artist,” so he can't be left outside unsupervised. He's overly excited by cats and small animals, so he needs to go to a home without any other small pets.
Alfred12 year old Domestic Shorthair Tabby
Who's the smartest cat we know? Alfred is! If you hold up two cans of cat food, he will rub up against the one he wants for dinner. (No foolin'!) This older gentleman cat also loves hiding inside boxes, baskets and other cozy areas. He does his best in a quiet, calm environment and should go to a home with no kids, no kittens and no puppies. But he can do well with other adult cats. Still, he would prefer hanging out with other humans. But on his terms, of course!
Lovebug2 ½ year old Domestic Shorthair Manx
This cat lives up to her name. She relishes giving and receiving affection and thrives on human attention (which makes her a bit of an oddity in the feline world!). She doesn't like other cats though, so she needs to end up in a home without any. She's also been a bit finicky about using her litter box, so you should consider Feliway feline pheromone upon entering your home, as it will calm her. If you give this adorable, chubby Manx girl a chance, we know she'll fast become a lifelong friend. She is currently in our shelter, so come visit her today!
When you adopt your pet from a shelter, you are literally saving a life. Thousands of animals die every year in shelters and their only crime is they are homeless. Thank you for choosing adoption.
